Valleys Regional Park
The Valleys Regional Park project is going to
develop, expand and enhance the unique tourism potential of the
south Wales valleys
The Valleys Regional Park (VRP) convergence funding bid was
approved in April 2009 by the Wales European Funding Office
resulting in a £22m investment to develop, expand and enhance the
unique tourism potential of the south Wales valleys. It is led by
the Welsh Government in partnership with a range of local
authorities, statutory public bodies and community and voluntary
organisations. Additional funding will be provided by the Assembly
Government through the Heads of the Valleys programme and
Department for the Economy and Transport, together with
contributions from the partner organisations.
The VRP project will create a mosaic of high-quality countryside
recreation and heritage amenities including country parks, urban
parks, green spaces, upland commons, reservoirs, lakes, canals,
nature reserves and river corridors as well as historic sites and
visitor attractions all linked together by an extensive rights of
way network, trails, tramways and cycle routes. This will be backed
by a sophisticated marketing campaign to promote the outstanding
landscape and environment distinctive to the Valleys as well as the
region’s rich industrial history and cultural heritage.
