This section contains all of the reports and
maps produced during both the original (2004 – 2007) and extension
(2007 – 2010) HABMAP projects. Maps produced during both phases of
the project are available to download in both MapInfo and ArcGIS
formats, and as .jpg files.
Predictive maps
The HABMAP project produced predicted biotope distribution maps
for the southern Irish Sea by using a modelling technique that
linked known occurrences of biotopes (from survey data) with
physical characteristics of the environment. Two sets of predictive
biotope maps were produced; one set during the original HABMAP
project (2004 – 2007) for the INTERREG project area, and a new,
updated set during the extension project (2007 – 2010) that
included all of welsh waters. The maps produced during the
extension project were based on more up-to-date physical and
biological input datasets. Both sets of maps have been coloured
according to the confidence of the predicted biotope
distributions.
Combined biotope maps were produced by combining individual
biotope maps produced during both the original and extension HABMAP
projects. Individual maps were combined in a GIS, then sorted so
that the biotope with the highest confidence score in any given
area was ranked first, and therefore displayed in the final map. NB
Where more than one biotope was predicted to occur in an area of
the map, all biotopes were ranked in the relevant polygons within
the GIS, according to their confidence scores. For full details of
how the maps were compiled, please refer to the “modelling” chapter
of the HABMAP report (Biomôr 5b). Combined GIS layers are available
below for both the original and extension projects.
2010 Extension Project Outputs
Extension project combined biotope map
This GIS layer was compiled by combining the extension project
level 4 biotope maps, with level 3 biotopes used (where available)
to fill any gaps. It is available to download as a MapInfo, ArcGIS
or JPG file.
Extension project level 3 biotope maps
These zip folders contain predicted biotope distribution maps
for each of the MNCR 04.05 level 3 biotopes found in the HABMAP
extension project area. Maps are coloured according to their
confidence levels. For further details on how the maps were
created, please refer to the HABMAP extension project report.
Extension project level 4 biotope maps
These zip folders contain predicted biotope distribution
maps for each of the MNCR 04.05 level 4 biotopes found in the
HABMAP extension project area. Maps are coloured according to their
confidence levels. For further details on how the maps were
created, please refer to the HABMAP extension project report.
Extension project level 5 biotope maps
These zip folders contain predicted biotope distribution maps
for each of the MNCR 04.05 level 5 biotopes found in the HABMAP
extension project area. Maps are coloured according to their
confidence levels. For further details on how the maps were
created, please refer to the HABMAP extension project report.
2007 Original Project Outputs
Original project combined biotope map
This GIS layer was compiled from the original HABMAP combined
level 4 biotope map, with level 3 biotopes used (where available)
to fill any gaps. The combined biotope GIS is available to download
in either ArcGIS, MapInfo or JPG format.
Original project level 3 biotope maps
These zip folders contain predicted biotope distribution maps
for each of the MNCR 04.05 level 3 biotopes found in the original
HABMAP project area. Maps are coloured according to their
confidence levels. For further details on how the maps were
created, please refer to the HABMAP project report.
Original project level 4 biotope maps
These zip folders contain predicted biotope distribution
maps for each of the MNCR 04.05 level 4 biotopes found in the
original HABMAP project area. Maps are coloured according to their
confidence levels. For further details on how the maps were
created, please refer to the HABMAP project report.
Original project level 5 biotope maps
These zip folders contain predicted biotope distribution maps
for each of the MNCR 04.05 level 5 biotopes found in the original
HABMAP project area. Maps are coloured according to their
confidence levels. For further details on how the maps were
created, please refer to the HABMAP project report.
Data collation maps
GIS layers were created for all of the physical input datasets
used in the HABMAP modelling work. These included maximum and
minimum seabed temperatures, seabed sediments, bedforms, light
attenuation, bathymetry, salinity, tidally-induced bed-sheer stress
and wave-induced bed sheer stress. Data layers from both the
original (2004 – 2007) and extension (2007 – 2010) modelling work
are available to download as images. GIS files cannot be made
available due to the license conditions under which the original
data was supplied to the project.
Survey Station Summaries 2007
This zip file contains summary .pdf documents for each of the
macrofaunal and sediment sample stations visited during the HABMAP
research cruises (95 in total). Each document includes a location
map, description of the seabed sediment, biotope assigned to the
site, species list, video tow profile, sediment analysis data,
video stills and seabed images (where available).

Habitat Mapping for Conservation and Managment of the Southern Irish Sea I - Seabed Surveys Download Habitat Mapping for Conservation and Managment of the Souther Irish Sea I - Seabed Surveys.pdf (10 MB)
This report contains details and results of the survey work undertaken as part of the original HABMAP project (2004 – 2007). Two survey cruises were carried out in 2005 to collect data from five survey areas throughout the southern Irish Sea that would help validate the outputs of the project’s modelling work.

Habitat Mapping for Conservation and Managment of the Southern Irish Sea II - Modelling & Mapping Download Habitat Mapping for Conservation and Managment of the Souther Irish Sea II - Modelling & Mapping.pdf (36 MB)
This report contains details and results of the habitat modelling work undertaken as part of the original HABMAP project (2004 – 2007). The model used known associations between benthic habitats and the physical environment to predict their occurrence in areas where survey data does not currently exist.
