Common Pipistrelle Bat
(Pipistrellus pipistrellus)
A common bat in Wales the common pipistrelle
is none the less highly protected by law

One of the most common species of bat in Wales, the common
pipistrelle is found throughout the country and is highly dependent
on buildings. These gregarious small bats commonly use roofs for
breeding during the summer when females give birth and raise their
young and, in general, disperse in the autumn.
Although often found in buildings during the summer months they
are not usually seen in the loft area, preferring to use narrow
spaces under soffits or between roofing felt and slates or
weatherboarding. These spaces provide the warmth and insulation the
bats require.
The common pipistrelle, like other British bats, eats only
insects- it can consume over 3,000 midges in one night.
