Common Lizard

A throw-away tail - the slender common lizard is well adapted to escaping predators

Habitat – Usually spotted sunbathing in open areas near dense cover, this lizard lives throughout Wales in many different types of habitat.  It is often easy to see in coastal areas such as cliff tops and sand dunes.

Apearance – The lizard grows to about 15cm long, most of this being a long, thin tail that is quickly jettisoned if the lizard is picked up by a predator or a human. Its colour varies from brown and yellow to bright green, so it is sometimes confused with a rare sand lizard, Lacerta agilis.

Young – Born between June and August

Eats - Small invertebrates

Latin name - Lacerta vivipara
