Grass Snake

Wales's largest reptile - often seen swimming across ponds in search of food

Habitat – It lives throughout Wales, especially along the west coast and near water where it hunts frogs and fish (it also eats small mammals and worms). It needs piles of rotting vegetation or animal manure warmed by the sun as these are perfect spots to lay eggs.

Appearance: It can grow to over 1m in length and is our largest native snake. It is grey/green/olive in colour, with varying amounts of black streaks on the flanks and a bright yellow and black collar behind the head.
