Slow worm
Don't be mislead by the name - this
garden lover is a legless lizard
Habitat - Gardens and allotments, where they
feast on slugs and snails, or anywhere with soft soil and dense
vegetation.
Appearance - Not a worm or a snake, but a
legless lizard, adapted for a life spent partly underground or
wriggling through the base of grassy tussocks. The slow worm
has small scales all over its body and will drop its tail to escape
predators. Their colour varies from grey to brown
and some males have extensive blue
spotting. The young are born with gold and black
stripes along their bodies.
