Policies, legislation & guidance

A sound policy and legislative framework is essential to underpin and guide the work of protecting and improving the quality of our coast and seas.

There are several initiatives underway in Wales, UK and Europe that are key to achieving our goal, including:

  • The Westminster government’s Marine Stewardship Initiative (2002)
  • Implementing the Marine and Coastal Access Act (2009) that provide tools for more sustainable management of our seas.
  • Implementing the Marine Strategy Framework Directive – A European Directive that requires member states to develop marine strategies designed to achieve Good Environmental Status of European seas waters by 2020
  • The 'Ecosystem approach' that the UK signed up to at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2000.

Further information can be found on the Defra and WAG webpages.
