Historic landscapes register
In partnership with Cadw and the International
Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS UK), CCW compiled the two
volume Register of Landscapes of Historic Interest in Wales.
It includes 58 landscapes across Wales, ranging from former
industrial centres to ancient rural settlements.
Thankfully, favourable conditions in Wales have allowed many
historic landscapes to survive. Much of our land has never been
cleared or ploughed and urban development has often been confined
to small areas.
This means that visible, as well as
archaeological evidence of the past, has survived in great
abundance.
When the last great ice-age receded the land
was littered with a plentiful supply of hard surface stone. This
quickly became the material of choice for our ancestors, and what
they created would outlive anything built with soil or timber.
In more recent times, the abundance of water,
minerals and other raw materials put Wales at the forefront of the
Industrial Revolution. This has left us with a vast industrial
archaeological legacy that is of international importance.
The enchanting landscapes of Wales are
therefore of great historical interest.
In partnership with Cadw and the International
Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS UK) CCW has compiled a
Register of Landscapes of Historic Interest in Wales.
The Register comes in two volumes and
describes 58 landscapes in Wales that are of outstanding or special
historic interest.
These landscapes allow us to witness, first
hand, the legacy of our ancestors. How they shaped the landscape,
and how Wales was - quite literally - crafted into the modern
nation that it is today!
