Caeau Penglaneinon

The site is of special interest for its unimproved neutral grassland and associated herb-rich acid grassland. Caeau Penglaneinon consists of a number of upland meadows containing grassland of a species-rich type now rarely found in Wales. They are managed using traditional farming techniques. The site is important for its variety of plants, and also for the insects, birds and mammals that this plant diversity helps to support.

Caeau is the plural of cae ‘field’(caeau). Penglaneinon means ‘top of the bank of (the river) Einon’ with pen ‘top’ and glan ‘bank’. Einon is a personal name that has been adopted as a ‘river-name’.

The site comprises a series of small fields situated at an altitude of 340m on an east-facing hillside above Caban-coch Reservoir. It supports extensive areas of herb-rich grassland of a type that is characteristic of the upland fringe in this part of Wales.
