Chwarel Talar Wen (Talar Wen Quarry)

This site is a small disused quarry. The quarry exposes a section in buff to grey, decalcified sandy limestones belonging to the Llandeilo Series of rocks which were deposited approximately 460 million years ago (during the Ordovician Period of geological time). The site is fossiliferous and has yielded a rich trilobite fauna.

Chwarel means ‘quarry’ (chwarel). Talar-wen means ‘white headland’ with talar ‘headland (of a ploughed field)’ and gwen ‘white’ but may encompass a range of meanings such as ‘greyish-white’, ‘pale’, ‘blessed’.
