This SSSI is of national (UK) and possibly
international importance because it is a key locality for study of
rocks of Llandovery age (a subdivision of the Silurian Period named
after that area of Carmarthenshire) and has yielded one of the best
assemblage of fossils that have so far been found in rocks formed
at this time (about 440 million years ago).
