This small disused quarry exposes rocks from
deep within the Earth, beneath the outer crust. They were brought
to the surface as a result of volcanic activity in the
Carboniferous period (about 345 million years ago). The site gives
us a rare insight into the composition of that portion of inner
Earth known as the mantle. For this reason it is of national
importance, and is frequently used for teaching and research.
