Berwyn SPA

Berwyn Special Protection Area (SPA) is an extensive area of north Wales’ upland running South West from Llangollen in the North East to Mallwyd in the South West, a distance of 25 miles end to end. The site incorporates the ffridd (upland fields) at around 300metres altitude up to the highest point 827 metres at Cadair Berwyn. Habitats grade from the lower slopes through Acid grasslands, dry heath and on the very top Blanket Bog. Some areas are dominated by stands of bracken and scrub. Berwyn is one of the most important uplands in Wales for breeding birds. It has been designated an SPA to protect the internationally significant populations of hen harrier, Merlin, Peregrine and Red Kite.
