Kenfig/ Cynffig SAC

Kenfig/Cynffig SAC includes two separate sand-dune systems, Kenfig and Merthyr Mawr. Both demonstrate a transition from small, shifting dunes that are still forming to more fixed and stable dunes further inland. Both systems have extensive areas of dune grassland and low-lying, wetter, dune slacks. These dune slacks are amongst the most species-rich in the UK, supporting communities dominated by a variety of mosses and higher plants. A number of rare plants, notably fen orchid and a rare liverwort, petalwort, can also be found in some of the dune slacks.

At Merthyr Mawr there is a small amount of salt marsh, a habitat that is rare on this stretch of coast. Kenfig Pool is a fine example of a coastal alkaline lake with a moderate nutrient status which has a rich carpet of stoneworts.
