PDFSkomer Marine Nature Reserve Distribution and Abundance of Echinus Esculentus and Selected Starfish Species 2007-CCW Regional Report CCW-WW-08-2 (692 kB) - 05/07/2012

Echinus esculentus (Sea urchin) plays a key role in the structure of sub-tidal communities. Large numbers were removed from Skomer MNR during the 1970's when divers targeted the population for the curio trade and a population survey was completed in 1979. No repeat surveys were completed until 2003 when data was collected to establish the status of both the E. esculentus population and conspicuous starfish species. This survey repeated the methods used in 2003 and established fixed surveys sites that can be used in future surveys.

PDFEcological Effects of Re-building Beaches on Intertidal Habitats in Wales CCW Science Report No 997 (7 MB) - 28/06/2012

In 2012, CCW commissioned this study to examine one of the recommendations of the Phase 2 study, namely: “The ecological effects (including potential benefits or adverse effects) of re-building beaches need to be investigated in more detail. This should consider the most appropriate places for beach re-building [in terms of the potential beneficial and adverse effects on the services provided by the beaches] such as, the methods used (including timing of works) and the suitability of different types of material.”

PDFAtlas Of The Marine Mammals Of Wales-CCW Marine Monitoring Report No 68 (8 MB) - 09/05/2012

The analysis in this report shows that certain species have hot-spots in their distributions and, for some there are seasonal changes in how they are distributed. For those species that are designated 'features' of Special Areas of Conservation, this information will inform the management of those areas in accordance with the Habitats and Species Directive. For other species that are protected under national and international law, this information will inform marine spatial planning initiatives, environmental assessments and sustainable development in the marine environment.
